In trying to build the search engine ranking of beauty2u.com using various techniques, it looks like we've scored a huge OWN GOAL.
I used a rather neat service (website), who's name i won't mention here to avoid indirectly promoting it, that offered an automated approach to building a list of reciprocal links. So i offered up a few of my high ranking but unimportant websites and added the server side code so that the reciprocal links could be shown on my sites and then set it up so that all reciprocal links point back to beauty2u. The site doesn't just add random links it lets you select other member's sites you want to exchange with and send a request. I did this with 30 sites and got a nice pool of reciprocal links. Theoretically this would work rather well because there's nothing in the rendered code which refers to the backlinks site - so google can't figure out that its a link exchange program.... WRONG. After 3 months, another domain we've got www.nailoidresults.com which points to the beauty2u site, is appearing higher in google natural search for our main keywords than www.beauty2u.com ... Oops.
And its not that the domain name contains any of words or acronyms that are closer to the keywords. So what should i conclude from this. Currently i've concluded that google have figured out this promotion technique and score you down for it. Or perhaps, the sites i chose to backlink with were bad sites already blacklisted by google somehow. Comments & suggestions welcome.
